Dr. Umesh B Khanna is a Consultant Nephrologist & Transplant Physician based in Mumbai, practicing at Lancelot Kidney & GI Centre in Borivali West. This centre incorporates a 28-bed free-standing dialysis unit, performing some 350 dialysis procedures per month. Dr. Khanna also visits Suchak Hospital in Malad East, and is an Honorary Nephrologist at Asian Heart Hospital (Bandra), Suvarna General Hospital (Borivali), Karuna Hospital (Borivali) and BSES Hospital (Andheri).
Dr. Khanna excelled at academics right from his early school days, and bagged innumerable certificates, medals and scholarships for regularly finishing amongst the toppers at almost every examination. He did his undergraduate and postgraduate medical education at Seth G S Medical College and KEM Hospital in Mumbai.
Dr. Khanna has been in private practice for over 25 years, since May 1987. He has vast experience in Clinical Nephrology, Haemodialysis, Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD), Kidney Transplants, Critical Care Medicine, CAVH, CAVHD & IPD, and Hypertension.
He has technical skills pertaining to the procedures of Peritoneal Dialysis, Haemodialysis, Haemoperfusion, Plasmapheresis and Kidney Biopsy. He is proficient in the management of nephrological problems in adults as well as children, including patients with acute intoxications. He has independently managed a total of 150 renal transplants, at KEM Hospital as well as privately.
Dr. Khanna has set up the Nephrology Department for several hospitals and clinics. He was the first to establish the concept of free-standing dialysis units or satellite / community dialysis centres in India, and has set up 16 such units in Mumbai. He was also the first to come up with the concept of Nephrologist-owned-and-managed private dialysis units in Mumbai.
Dr. Khanna conducts regular training programmes in dialysis and other Nephrology topics for nurses, technicians, physicians, general practitioners and medical students. He is actively involved in many medical associations and societies. As Chairman of the Public Education Cell of the National Kidney Foundation (India), he arranged a series of educational talks, interactive sessions and panel discussions on kidney diseases and organ donation. Dr. Khanna is Founder and Chairman of Mumbai Kidney Foundation (MKF), a project of Jeevan Jyot Charitable Trust, of which he is a trustee. MKF endeavours to brighten the lives of chronic kidney disease patients. Launched on the occasion of the first World Kidney Day (9th March 2006), MKF works towards education, prevention and treatment of kidney disease and rehabilitation of kidney patients.
